UNDER THE MASK

“I will learn to laugh
away from the helical turbulences
and unbelievable stories
of pompous orators.
Ah! My skin tightens
my body shakes like boiling water
and my coat is getting huge:
the nun’s habit under which the wolf hides.
Beware…
of yourself.”

Corneliu Lungu

Hypocrisy

In a visual reinterpretation of Corneliu Lungu’s poem, Daniela Caraman explores the ambivalence of the ‘mask’ both as a psychological and philosophical concept.
While adapting one’s mask to a given context is deemed healthy by psychology, what are we left with when all the masks are finally removed and we are faced with our inner identity? Have we actually been wearing those masks or have the masks been wearing us? Where is the line between adjustment and hypocrisy?
